Coffee cultivation in Loja dates back to colonial times. The region's rugged and volcanic terrain presents challenges, but the people of Loja have shown great resilience and dedication in overcoming them.
Loja is the southernmost province of Ecuador, bordering Peru. It is known for the Petrified Forest of Puyango, one of the world's largest petrified forests, covering 2,658 hectares.
Loja's altitude and volcanic soils create an ideal microclimate for high-quality coffee cultivation, resulting in a unique flavor profile with bright acidity and aromatic complexity.
In 2014, Caravela established a dry mill in Quito and began sourcing coffee directly from small-scale producers in Ecuador. Caravela has supported Loja's coffee growers by providing training, resources, and fair pricing, helping them improve coffee quality and gain access to new markets.
